Recovery Boat Simulator
After about 2 minutes of flight, the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB)
separate from the Space Shuttle and descend by parachute into
the ocean and await recovery. Two specially designed and
constructed retrieval vessels, based at Kennedy Space Center,
recover the SRBs and their various components. The Liberty Star
and the Freedom Star are 176 feet long, have a beam of 37 feet,
have a depth of 15 feet and draw 9 feet of water. Both ships are
used on shuttle missions. Each ship recovers one booster casing,
three main parachutes, and a frustum-drogue combination.
Guests can virtually recover the Solid Rocket Boosters as
they recoil the parachutes, prepare the SRB casing for towing,
and use a small crane to lift the frustum on the ship “deck”.
Graphic panels briefly explain SRB recovery and show personnel
working on the retrieval vessels.
